Wattenberg Field – Colorado
Located in Colorado’s DJ Basin, the Wattenberg Field, discovered in 1970, was historically a major gas field. It produced over 4.0 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of natural gas from the J Sands, Codell, and Niobrara formations from nearly 20,000 wells.
Since 2009, when horizontal drilling and multi-stage fracture stimulation was applied to this area, the Niobrara has emerged as another major crude oil and natural gas liquids-rich resource play. Bonanza Creek is located in the oil-weighted “extension area” of the Wattenberg Field with a consolidated position prospective for all benches of the Niobrara. The Codell formation is present on approximately half of our acreage.
We are currently in full development of the Niobrara “B” Bench using 4,000 foot horizontal wells spaced at 80 acres, testing the application of 9,000 foot horizontal wells, and evaluating potential downspacing to 40 acres. We are beginning to drill horizontal wells in the Niobrara “C” Bench and the Codell formation.
